Many people with dementia feel trapped in their homes because of difficulties in getting around. They are reluctant to venture outside for fear of becoming confused or getting lost. They may find it too difficult to use public transport or visit shops, cafés, banks and the hairdresser - once familiar places may now appear to be intimidating. With a little help from our Dementia Friends in Liss we can change this situation for the better.
What is dementia? Dementia is a general term to describe the symptoms of a number of different illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, Lewy body and Vascular dementia. The most common symptoms are declining memory; trouble finding the right words when speaking; anxiety, mood and personality changes; confusion with time and place. Dementia affects each person differently.
Dementia is more common in the elderly but can affect people at any stage in their life. Because we are living longer there is an increase in the number of people affected by dementia in every community, not just in the UK but around the world.
